2014-09-16 20:48

On the afternoon of June 8th, the 29thNew Horizon Lecture witnessed a grand opening. Professor Luis Chanci of St.Thomas University, director of China-Chili Research Center delivered a speech entitled “The Natural Resources Curse and Export Diversification in Latin American Countries”.

At the beginning, Professor Luis didn’t directly turn to economy. Instead, he presented the scenery, people and custom of Latin American countries and asked everyone’s impression on Latin American countries such as Chili, Mexico and Brazil, which helps attract interest of the audience. He then turned to the topic “whether the abundant natural resources of Latin America facilitate diversified export”. Through considerable investigation data, Professor Luis analyzed the “motivation” of export trade diversification and the export trade of the Latin America in the recent twenty years. In the analysis of “motivation”, he also mentioned diversification of export and price, two concepts of “composite effect” and “dynamic effect” and emphasized the importance of “economic concentration”. With China as an example, he compared China’s influence on the world economy before and after accession to the WTO, its influence on the export volume of the Latin America and the Latin American countries’ focus on China’s economic trend and policies after 2001.

After the lecture, Professor Luis left some time to take questions. He earnestly answered all the questions. After the lecture, the audience came to the front to further communicate with Professor Luis.
